What your child learns

  • Rhyming words: bright and night, hill and still
  • Words about the sky: sun, sunrise, sunset, stars
  • Making new words with 'sun': sunlight, sunflower
  • Blends at the start of words: sp, st, sk

What the poem is about

A child wonders where the bright sun goes when the day ends. The child sees it go down behind a faraway hill, and then the whole world becomes dark and quiet.

The child goes to bed and sleeps until morning comes. When the child opens their eyes, the sun is shining again. The poem has a calm, gentle feeling and shows the daily pattern of day and night. The unit opens with a busy street picture to look at and talk about.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • shines: gives out bright light (हिंदी: चमकता है)
  • bright: full of light (हिंदी: चमकीला, तेज़)
  • wonder: to think about something and want to know (हिंदी: सोचना, जानना चाहना)
  • sinks: goes down slowly (हिंदी: डूबता है)
  • distant: far away (हिंदी: दूर का)
  • still: quiet and not moving (हिंदी: शांत)
  • peep: to begin to show a little (हिंदी: झाँकना)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. What does the child wonder about?
  2. Where does the sun go at night in the poem?
  3. What does the child see in the morning?
  4. What do you see in the sky at night?

Answers for parents

  1. The child wonders where the sun goes at night.
  2. It sinks behind a distant hill.
  3. The child sees the sun shining down again.
  4. For example: I see the moon and many twinkling stars.

Grammar corner: Rhyming words

Rhyming words end with the same sound, like night and bright. Poems often use rhyming words to sound musical and to be easy to remember.

  • The moon is bright at night.
  • The sun went down behind the hill, and the birds were still.
  • I count the stars before I sleep, until the sun begins to peep.

Practice at home

  1. Find the rhyme for 'night' in the poem.
  2. Add 'sun' to make a new word: ___flower, ___light, ___set
  3. Say aloud three words that start with 'st'.

Answers: 1. bright · 2. sunflower, sunlight, sunset · 3. For example: star, stick, stone

Try this

Play 'I spy' as the book suggests, but use the sky. Look out of a window in the day or at night and say 'I spy with my little eye something that is ...' and give a clue, like 'round and white' for the moon. At bedtime, say the poem softly together, lying down and closing your eyes at the line about sleep.

Tip for parents

Ask in Hindi at sunset: 'Suraj kahaan ja raha hai?' Let your child answer in their own words, then say the English together: 'The sun is setting.' Say surya and sun, taare and stars side by side, and praise every English word your child tries.
