Short videos, played again and again, then spoken aloud
Every chapter comes in a few kinds of video. Here is what each one is for, and how to use them at home and in class.
One chapter, four ways to meet it.
Start with Listen. Move on only when your child knows the chapter well.
For parents, teachers and students
You don’t need good English to help. Become your child’s partner in learning.
- Fix a time. Start with 15 minutes a day and grow to an hour. Keep to it.
- Fix the order. Listen first, then repeat after me, then sing or speak. When the order is fixed, you don’t have to explain anything.
- Use the words. Once a word is learnt, use it at home: numbers, colours, body parts, toys, clothes, animals, food.
- Stories at bedtime, songs in the morning.
The first skill in learning a language is listening, and CALP videos are made for it: slow, clear and colourful.
- Play a chapter’s Listen video on the projector or smart board three or four times, as your lesson plan allows.
- Then play the repeat-after-me version of the same chapter and let the class say it together.
- Plan a chapter a week for short poems and stories, and two weeks for longer ones, so the book is done in about ten months, with time for exams.
Older students and adults can use CALP too, especially if you studied in another language and now study in English.
- Spend half an hour a day.
- If English is new for you, start from Class 1 and move up class by class. The early books build the words the later ones expect.
- Listen until you can follow without pausing, then say the lines aloud.
Primary videos are short. Turn on Loop in the YouTube player’s settings, and the chapter plays again by itself while your child listens.
