What your child learns

  • Words about teamwork: trust, cheer, goal, spirit
  • Group words such as a herd of sheep and a bunch of keys
  • Spotting rhyming words in a poem
  • Talking about favourite food and festivals

What the poem is about

The poem is about a team that sticks together. The children in it help each other, cheer and sing, and believe that teamwork can beat any difficulty. Whether they win or lose, they share everything and trust one another.

The feeling of the poem is joyful and hopeful. Its message is simple: when hands are joined, the goal comes closer, and the joy of being a team begins. The chapter also links this idea to our country, where people with different food, festivals and languages still stand together in unity.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • strong: having a lot of power; not weak (हिंदी: मज़बूत)
  • cheer: to shout happily to support someone (हिंदी: जयकार करना)
  • teamwork: working together as a group (हिंदी: मिलकर काम करना)
  • overcome: to win over a problem (हिंदी: पार पाना)
  • share: to give a part of what you have to others (हिंदी: बाँटना)
  • bond: a close link between people (हिंदी: रिश्ता, बंधन)
  • trust: believing that someone is good and honest (हिंदी: भरोसा)
  • goal: something you want to reach or do (हिंदी: लक्ष्य)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. What happens when the team joins hands?
  2. What does the team do when they win or lose?
  3. What makes you feel joyful?
  4. Tell about a time you did something together with a friend.

Answers for parents

  1. When they join hands, the goal comes near and the team feels strong.
  2. They always share, and their trust in each other stays.
  3. For example: I feel joyful when I play cricket with my cousins.
  4. For example: My friend and I cleaned our classroom shelf together, and it was done quickly.

Grammar corner: Group words (collective nouns)

Some words name a whole group of people, animals or things together. We say 'a team of players' instead of listing every player. Different groups have their own special words.

  • Our school choir sang a song about unity.
  • A swarm of bees worked together to build a hive.
  • Ravi's team carried a bundle of sticks for the campfire.

Practice at home

  1. Fill in the blank: a ___ of cows (herd / pack)
  2. Match: a bouquet of ___ (flowers / wolves)
  3. Which word rhymes with 'fall'? tall / sing / share

Answers: 1. herd · 2. flowers · 3. tall

Try this

Play 'Join Hands'. Stand in a circle with family or classmates and hold hands. Try to pass a light thing, like a paper ball, around the circle without letting go of each other's hands. Then talk about how it felt to need everyone's help.

Tip for parents

First ask your child in Hindi, 'Mil-jul kar kaam karne se kya hota hai?' Let them answer in Hindi, then help them say one line in English, such as 'Together we are strong.' If they mix Hindi and English words, that is fine; praise them for trying.
