From the NCERT English book Raindrops for Class 1, chapter 13. NCERT’s newer Class 1 book is Mridang, but many schools still teach Raindrops.

Watch: Colours

Play the video three or four times. The first time, just listen. Then point at the pictures, and from the third time, say the lines along with the video. Short, repeated listening is how CALP builds a child’s English.

What your child learns

  • Colour words: green, black, white, blue
  • Describing things with 'It is green' and 'It is bright'
  • Asking politely: 'Can I play with you?'
  • Saying thank you when someone is kind

What the lesson is about

One friend asks to play with others and praises a lovely dress. Then each one talks about the colour of their own dress. One dress is green and bright. One is black, not bright, as dark as night. One is white. One is green and blue, and its owner says they dance for children.

The chapter teaches the words for colours and the words bright and dark. It also shows polite talk, like asking 'Can I play with you?' and saying thank you.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • colour: red, green, blue and so on; what we see on things (हिंदी: रंग)
  • bright: full of light and easy to see (हिंदी: चमकीला)
  • lovely: very nice and pretty (हिंदी: सुंदर)
  • dress: clothes someone wears (हिंदी: कपड़े)
  • black: the darkest colour, like the night sky (हिंदी: काला)
  • white: the colour of milk (हिंदी: सफ़ेद)
  • night: the dark time when we sleep (हिंदी: रात)
  • dance: move your body to music (हिंदी: नाचना)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. Which colour is bright in the chapter?
  2. Which dress is as black as night?
  3. What does the one with the green and blue dress do for children?
  4. What colour are you wearing today?

Answers for parents

  1. The green dress is bright.
  2. The black dress is as black as night.
  3. The one with the green and blue dress dances for children.
  4. For example: I am wearing a blue shirt today.

Grammar corner: Describing with 'It is …'

We can tell what something is like with 'It is' and a describing word. The describing word can be a colour, like green, or a word like bright. We can also say 'as black as night' to compare.

  • Look at my cap. It is red.
  • The sun is out. It is bright today.
  • My new shoes are as white as milk.

Practice at home

  1. Fill in the blank: My dress is black. It is as black as ___.
  2. Choose the colour word: dance, green or play?
  3. Say aloud to a family member: 'Can I play with you?'

Answers: 1. night · 2. green · 3. Sample reply: Yes, you can. Come and play.

Try this

Do a colour hunt at home. Call out a colour from the chapter, like green, and your child runs to touch something of that colour and names it in English. Then let your child call the colours for you.

Tip for parents

Point to things at home and say the colour in Hindi first, 'yeh hara hai', and then in English, 'it is green'. If your child answers 'yeh green hai', that is a good start: repeat the full English sentence and praise them.
