What the poem is about
The poem gives a short verse for each season. In spring, flowers bloom and children play. Summer is hot, and everyone wants to cool off in water. Monsoon clouds bring rain that makes us cool. Winter is cold, and people enjoy the sun.
The chapter also shows Brinda visiting her grandparents in hot Hyderabad in a cotton frock, and Prithvi in cold Shimla. Children name clothes like sari, kurta and frock, make a paper hat, and sing two short songs about thunder and rain.
New words, with Hindi meanings
- season: a part of the year with its own weather (हिंदी: मौसम)
- spring: the season of flowers (हिंदी: बसंत)
- summer: the hot season (हिंदी: गर्मी)
- winter: the cold season (हिंदी: सर्दी)
- monsoon: the rainy season (हिंदी: बरसात)
- bloom: open up, like a flower (हिंदी: खिलना)
- cloud: a white or grey thing in the sky (हिंदी: बादल)
- thunder: the loud sound in a storm (हिंदी: बादल की गरज)
Talk about it
Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.
- What happens to flowers in spring?
- What do monsoon clouds bring?
- Where did Brinda go, and was it hot or cold?
- Which season do you like the most?
Answers for parents
- They bloom.
- They bring rain.
- She went to Hyderabad. It was hot.
- For example: I like winter because I enjoy the sun.
Grammar corner: Describing words: hot and cold
Describing words tell us more about something. Hot, cold and cool tell us about the weather. We often say 'is' before them: summer is hot.
- My tea is hot.
- The water in the pot is cool.
- In Shimla, the wind is cold.
Practice at home
- Fill in the blank: Winter is ___.
- Spot the rhyme: play, day, rain. Which two rhyme?
- Choose: In the rain I use an (umbrella / sweater).
Answers: 1. cold · 2. play and day · 3. umbrella
Try this
Play 'Act the season'. The parent calls out a season, and the child acts it out: fanning for summer, shivering for winter, opening an umbrella for monsoon, smelling flowers for spring. Then the child names one thing we wear in that season.
Tip for parents
Ask, 'Aaj garmi hai ya sardi?' and let your child answer in Hindi first, then say 'It is hot' or 'It is cold' together. Talk about the weather this way every morning. Praise your child even if they say only one English word.
