What your child learns

  • Names of fruits, vegetables and flowers
  • Colour words with food: yellow mango, red apple
  • Asking 'Are these ...?' and answering 'Yes, they are'
  • Sharing with others

What the lesson is about

The chapter begins with a picture of fruits and vegetables for children to name, count and talk about. Then comes a song about five mangoes on a tree: one for a traveller, a bird, a squirrel, a rabbit, and one to share with you. It teaches the joy of sharing.

In the story, Mini's father is a farmer who sells vegetables. Every Saturday Mini goes to the market with him. He tells her the names of flowers like roses, marigolds and jasmine, and fruits like pineapples, oranges and watermelon. Mini goes home with flowers, and her father carries a bag of fruits.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • market: a place to buy things (हिंदी: बाज़ार)
  • farmer: a person who grows food (हिंदी: किसान)
  • traveller: a person on a long walk or trip (हिंदी: यात्री)
  • squirrel: a small animal with a big tail (हिंदी: गिलहरी)
  • share: give some to others (हिंदी: बाँटना)
  • marigold: an orange or yellow flower (हिंदी: गेंदा)
  • jasmine: a small white flower that smells sweet (हिंदी: चमेली)
  • watermelon: a big green fruit, red inside (हिंदी: तरबूज)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. Who gets a mango from the tree?
  2. Where does Mini go every Saturday?
  3. What does Mini carry home?
  4. What is your favourite fruit?

Answers for parents

  1. A traveller, a bird, a squirrel, a rabbit, and you.
  2. She goes to the market with her father.
  3. A small basket of flowers.
  4. For example: My favourite fruit is mango.

Grammar corner: One and many with -s and -es

For more than one, we often add -s: one apple, two apples. Some words take -es: mango becomes mangoes, potato becomes potatoes. Listen for the extra sound at the end.

  • Mini saw many oranges.
  • Her father sells potatoes and tomatoes.
  • Five mangoes hang on the tree.

Practice at home

  1. Fill in the blank: one mango, two ___.
  2. Choose the colour: a brinjal is (purple / yellow).
  3. Answer: Are these apples? (They are oranges.)

Answers: 1. mangoes · 2. purple · 3. No, they are not. These are oranges.

Try this

Play 'market' at home. Put a few fruits and vegetables on a table. One person is the seller and one is the buyer. The buyer points and asks, 'What is this?' and the seller says its name in English, like Mini's father.

Tip for parents

In the kitchen, hold up a vegetable and ask its Hindi name first, like 'aloo', then say 'potato' together. Let your child mix words, such as 'I want aam, mango'. Praise them each time they use an English word.
