What your child learns

  • Names of farm animals and birds
  • Animal sounds: moo, cluck
  • Colour words: black crow, green parrot
  • Saying 'This is a ...' and 'These are ...'

What the poem is about

The poem is about Grandpa's farm. On the farm there is a cow that says moo and a hen that says cluck. Children can add more animals and use animal sounds from their own language.

In the reading part, a boy named Jaggu from Nagpur shows us a dog near his gate, cats in his verandah, a cow eating grass, a small rat, snakes in the field and monkeys in the trees. He also shows birds: a black crow, a grey pigeon, a small sparrow, a green parrot with a red beak and a colourful peacock. Jaggu loves animals and birds.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • farm: land where food is grown and animals live (हिंदी: खेत)
  • grandpa: your father's or mother's father (हिंदी: दादा या नाना)
  • verandah: an open space at the front of a house (हिंदी: बरामदा)
  • grass: green plants cows eat (हिंदी: घास)
  • crow: a black bird (हिंदी: कौआ)
  • pigeon: a grey bird (हिंदी: कबूतर)
  • peacock: a big bird with many colours (हिंदी: मोर)
  • beak: a bird's mouth (हिंदी: चोंच)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. Which animals are on Grandpa's farm?
  2. What colour is the parrot?
  3. Where do Jaggu's cats jump?
  4. Which animal or bird do you see near your house?

Answers for parents

  1. A cow and a hen.
  2. It is green, with a red beak.
  3. In the verandah of his house.
  4. For example: I see a crow and a dog near my house.

Grammar corner: This is and These are

We say 'This is' for one thing that is near us. We say 'These are' for more than one. Jaggu uses both when he shows us the animals.

  • This is a hen on the farm.
  • These are two black crows.
  • This is my grandpa's cow.

Practice at home

  1. Fill in the blank: ___ is a parrot.
  2. Choose: (This is / These are) monkeys.
  3. Say aloud: what sound does a cow make in English and in Hindi?

Answers: 1. This · 2. These are · 3. Moo in English; children may say their own word in Hindi.

Try this

Sing the farm song together and take turns adding an animal. Each person makes an animal's sound, like a dog barking or a goat bleating. The others must guess the animal and say its English name.

Tip for parents

Ask your child, 'Gaay kaise bolti hai?' and enjoy their answer, then sing the English line with moo. Name the birds you see from your window in Hindi first, then in English. Every try deserves a smile.
