What your child learns

  • Greetings: Good morning, Good afternoon, Good evening, Good night
  • Names of family members: mother, father, grandmother, uncle
  • Action words: hop, jump, skip, dance
  • Listening to and retelling a short story

What the lesson is about

The chapter starts with Namaste and then shows English greetings for different times of the day: Good morning, Good afternoon, Good evening and Good night. Children learn which greeting fits which time.

There is an action song with hop, jump and skip, a picture of children at play, and a song where each family member agrees to play, eat or sing with the child. In the story, Mama and Papa Sparrow build a soft nest. Three babies come out of the eggs, the whole family visits, and one day the babies fly into the sky.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • morning: the start of the day (हिंदी: सुबह)
  • evening: the time when the sun goes down (हिंदी: शाम)
  • night: the dark time when we sleep (हिंदी: रात)
  • nest: a bird's home (हिंदी: घोंसला)
  • sparrow: a small brown bird (हिंदी: गौरैया)
  • hop: jump on one foot (हिंदी: फुदकना)
  • family: the people we live with and love (हिंदी: परिवार)
  • cousin: your uncle's or aunt's child (हिंदी: चचेरा भाई या बहन)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. What do we say when we meet someone in the morning?
  2. What do we say when we go to bed?
  3. What did Papa Sparrow bring for the babies?
  4. How do you greet your grandparents?

Answers for parents

  1. We say 'Good morning'.
  2. We say 'Good night'.
  3. He brought food for them.
  4. For example: I say Namaste to my grandparents.

Grammar corner: Greeting words for the time of day

In English, the greeting changes with the time. We say Good morning early in the day and Good evening when the sun goes down. Good night is said only when we go to sleep.

  • Good morning, Papa Sparrow!
  • Good evening, Grandmother.
  • Good night, little sparrows.

Practice at home

  1. Fill in the blank: Before sleeping I say Good ___.
  2. Choose: At 8 o'clock in the morning I say (Good morning / Good evening).
  3. Say aloud: greet your mother in English after school.

Answers: 1. night · 2. Good morning · 3. Good afternoon, Mother.

Try this

Make a greeting time game. The parent says a time, like 'You just woke up' or 'It is bedtime', and the child says the right greeting. Then the child can hop like a baby sparrow to the parent for every right answer.

Tip for parents

Ask your child, 'Subah hum kya kehte hain?' and let them answer Namaste first, then add 'Good morning'. Use the English greetings at home every day so they become a habit. Smile and praise even a half-said greeting.
