Play the video three or four times. The first time, just listen. Then point at the pictures, and from the third time, say the lines along with the video. Short, repeated listening is how CALP builds a child’s English.
What your child learns
- English names of ten everyday fruits and vegetables
- Sorting foods into fruits and vegetables
- One and many: apple and apples
- Talking about the food they like
What the lesson is about
The chapter asks children to look at pictures and names each one: potato, apples, brinjal, orange, banana, peas, beans, pumpkin, guava and lemon.
It teaches the English names of common foods and helps children start sorting them into fruits and vegetables.
New words, with Hindi meanings
- potato: a vegetable that grows under the ground (हिंदी: आलू)
- brinjal: a purple vegetable with a shiny skin (हिंदी: बैंगन)
- pumpkin: a big round vegetable, often orange or green (हिंदी: कद्दू)
- guava: a green fruit with small seeds inside (हिंदी: अमरूद)
- peas: small round green seeds we cook and eat (हिंदी: मटर)
- beans: long green vegetables with seeds inside (हिंदी: फलियाँ)
- lemon: a small yellow or green fruit that tastes sour (हिंदी: नींबू)
Talk about it
Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.
- Which fruits did you see in the chapter?
- Which vegetables did you see?
- Which one is sour: a banana or a lemon?
- Which fruit or vegetable is your favourite?
Answers for parents
- Apples, orange, banana, guava and lemon.
- Potato, brinjal, peas, beans and pumpkin.
- A lemon is sour.
- For example: My favourite fruit is banana. I eat it in the morning.
Grammar corner: One and many (adding -s)
When we talk about one thing, we say ‘an apple’. When there are many, we usually add -s at the end: ‘apples’. Some words, like peas and beans, are mostly used for many.
- I have one banana, and my sister has two bananas.
- Mother bought three lemons from the market.
- There is one big pumpkin in the basket.
Practice at home
- Fill in the blank: one guava, two ___.
- Fruit or vegetable? Sort these: potato, banana, brinjal, orange.
- Make a sentence with ‘I like’ and one word from the chapter.
Answers: 1. guavas · 2. Fruits: banana, orange. Vegetables: potato, brinjal. · 3. For example: I like peas.
Try this
Go on a kitchen hunt. Ask your child to find any fruits and vegetables from the chapter at home and say each name in English. Then sort them into two groups, fruits and vegetables, and count how many are in each.
Tip for parents
Hold up a vegetable and ask its name in Hindi first, like आलू or बैंगन. Then say the English name together: potato, brinjal. When you cook or shop, keep asking “Aaloo ko English mein kya kehte hain?” and praise every answer, even a half-right one.
