From the NCERT English book Marigold for Class 3, unit 1. NCERT’s newer Class 3 book is Santoor, but many schools still teach Marigold.

Watch: Good Morning

Play the video three or four times. The first time, just listen. Then point at the pictures, and from the third time, say the lines along with the video. Short, repeated listening is how CALP builds a child’s English.

What your child learns

  • Nature words: sky, sun, winds, grass, bees
  • Greeting with 'Good morning'
  • Asking questions with 'How' and 'Who'
  • Reading a poem aloud with a cheerful voice

What the poem is about

In this poem a child wakes up and greets everything outside: the sky, the sun, the little winds, the birds, the trees, the creeping grass and the brown bees.

The child then asks them how they found out it was day, and who told them the night had gone. The poem ends with the child saying they are wide awake too and will soon come out to play. Its feeling is fresh, cheerful and friendly towards nature.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • sky: the space above us where we see the sun and clouds (हिंदी: आसमान)
  • winds: moving air (हिंदी: हवाएँ)
  • creeping: moving slowly and close to the ground (हिंदी: रेंगती हुई)
  • grass: thin green plants that cover the ground (हिंदी: घास)
  • brownie: brown in colour (हिंदी: भूरे)
  • bees: small flying insects that make honey and buzz (हिंदी: मधुमक्खियाँ)
  • wide awake: fully awake, not sleepy at all (हिंदी: पूरी तरह जागा हुआ)

Sing and dance

Once your child knows the poem, sing it together with actions. Children who can’t sing yet can still do the moves.

Explained in Hindi

If your child finds the English hard, watch this explanation of the poem and its word meanings in Hindi, then go back to the English video.

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. What does the child say good morning to?
  2. What does the child ask the birds and trees?
  3. What will the child do after waking up?
  4. What is the first thing you see when you wake up?

Answers for parents

  1. The child says good morning to the sky, the sun, the little winds, the birds, the trees, the creeping grass and the brown bees.
  2. The child asks how they found out it was day, and who told them the night had gone.
  3. The child will come out to play with them.
  4. For example: The first thing I see is the sunlight coming in through my window.

Grammar corner: Asking questions with 'How' and 'Who'

We use 'How' to ask the way something happens. We use 'Who' to ask about a person or thing that did something. A question ends with a question mark (?).

  • Who woke up the birds this morning?
  • How did the sun know it was time to rise?
  • Who is buzzing near the flowers?

Practice at home

  1. Choose 'How' or 'Who': ___ told you the night had gone?
  2. Say 'Good morning' to three things you can see from your window.
  3. Spot the rhyme: Which word rhymes with 'day': away or night?

Answers: 1. Who · 2. For example: Good morning, tree. Good morning, sun. Good morning, pigeon. · 3. away

Try this

Tomorrow morning, play "Good morning to...". Your child looks out of the window or steps outside and greets five things they can see, like "Good morning, tree." Then they can draw the sky, sun and birds and write "Good morning" at the top.

Tip for parents

In the morning, say 'सुप्रभात, सूरज!' in Hindi and then 'Good morning, sun!' in English, and let your child copy you. Name a few more things together, first in Hindi, then in English. If your child mixes the two, that is fine; praise every greeting.
