What your child learns

  • Words for kindness: love, kindness, smiles
  • Phrases with 'of': drops of water, grains of sand
  • Words for amounts: a cup of, a slice of, a box of
  • Making sentences in the right order

What the poem is about

The poem says that tiny drops of water and tiny grains of sand come together to make the huge ocean and the land we live on.

In the same way, small loving words, small kind acts and small warm deeds spread smiles and happiness. The message is that little things, done again and again, can make a big difference in the world.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • drops: very small amounts of a liquid (हिंदी: बूंदें)
  • grains: very tiny pieces, like sand or rice (हिंदी: दाने)
  • mighty: very big and strong (हिंदी: विशाल)
  • ocean: a very big sea (हिंदी: महासागर)
  • pleasant: nice and good to have (हिंदी: सुहावना)
  • kindness: being good and caring to others (हिंदी: दया)
  • deeds: things that you do (हिंदी: काम)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. What do little drops of water make?
  2. What do little grains of sand make?
  3. What do small kind acts spread?
  4. What is one kind thing you did today?

Answers for parents

  1. They make the mighty ocean.
  2. They make the pleasant land.
  3. They spread smiles and happiness.
  4. For example: I helped my grandmother carry her bag.

Grammar corner: Words for amounts: 'a cup of', 'a slice of'

Some things, like milk or bread, are not counted one by one. We use words like 'a cup of', 'a slice of' or 'drops of' to say how much. The word 'of' joins the amount to the thing.

  • I drank a cup of milk in the morning.
  • Mother gave me a slice of bread.
  • A few drops of oil fell on the floor.

Practice at home

  1. Fill in the blank: a ___ of toothpaste (tube / slice)
  2. Match: grains of, drops of — water, sand
  3. Put the words in order: likes Moti walk to a go for

Answers: 1. tube · 2. grains of sand, drops of water · 3. Moti likes to go for a walk.

Try this

Play 'Little things'. Put a few drops of water in a cup one by one and watch the water grow, or collect grains of rice into a small heap. Then make a 'kindness chain': each person says one small kind thing they will do today, in English or Hindi.

Tip for parents

Sing the song together slowly, then explain each line in Hindi, like 'छोटी-छोटी बूंदों से समुद्र बनता है'. Ask your child to name one small kind act in Hindi, and then help them say it in English. Praise the kind act and the English both.
