What your child learns

  • Asking politely: 'Do you know ___?'
  • Following a story with a repeating pattern
  • Nature words: ant, tree, shade, grass, leaf, wind
  • Blends 'bl' and 'pl': blue, plant

What the story is about

One day a little fly forgets his own name. He asks an ant, but the ant does not know and sends him to the tree. The tree sends him to the cow resting in its shade. The cow sends him to the grass, and the grass sends him to the fallen leaves.

Just as a leaf is about to answer, the wind blows and the leaf starts to fly. Seeing this, the fly suddenly remembers. His name is Fly, and he is very happy.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • little: small (हिंदी: छोटा)
  • forgotten: not able to remember (हिंदी: भूल गया)
  • ant: a tiny insect that lives in groups (हिंदी: चींटी)
  • shade: a cool place out of the sun (हिंदी: छाया)
  • dear: a kind word used when you talk to someone (हिंदी: प्यारे)
  • grass: thin green plants that cover the ground (हिंदी: घास)
  • wind: moving air (हिंदी: हवा)
  • remembered: brought back to the mind (हिंदी: याद आया)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. What did the fly forget?
  2. Whom did the fly ask first?
  3. How did the fly remember his name?
  4. If you forgot something, whom would you ask?

Answers for parents

  1. The fly forgot his name.
  2. He asked an ant first.
  3. The wind blew and a leaf began to fly. Seeing this, he remembered his name was Fly.
  4. For example: I would ask my mother or my teacher.

Grammar corner: Asking questions with 'Do you know'

We use 'Do you know' when we want to find out something from someone. The fly asks this question again and again. A question ends with a question mark.

  • Do you know where my pencil is?
  • Do you know the name of this flower?
  • Do you know how to make a paper boat?

Practice at home

  1. Put in order: cow, ant, grass, tree.
  2. Fill in the blank: The cow was sleeping in the ___ of the tree.
  3. Make a question starting with 'Do you know'.

Answers: 1. ant, tree, cow, grass · 2. shade · 3. Sample: Do you know my friend's name?

Try this

Act out the story. One person is the fly and goes around the room asking 'Do you know my name?' Others play the ant, tree, cow, grass and leaf. When someone blows like the wind and the 'leaf' flutters, the fly shouts his name happily.

Tip for parents

Ask your child what their own name means, first in Hindi, and tell them why you chose it. Then practise saying 'My name is ___' in English. Let your child also ask 'Do you know my name?' to family members as a fun game.
