What your child learns
- Place words: town, street, house, room
- Using 'in' and 'on' to say where things are
- Using 'there is' and 'there are'
- Writing your own home address
What the poem is about
The poem starts with a whole town. In the town there are streets, in a street there are houses, in a house there are rooms, and in a room there is a bed. On the bed is a basket, and in the basket are some flowers.
Then the poem goes back the other way, from the flowers all the way out to the town. It helps children see how small places sit inside bigger ones, and it is a lovely way to talk about their own home and address.
New words, with Hindi meanings
- town: a place with many houses, shops and streets (हिंदी: क़स्बा)
- street: a road with houses on its sides (हिंदी: गली)
- house: a building where people live (हिंदी: घर)
- room: a part of a house with walls (हिंदी: कमरा)
- basket: a container made of thin sticks or cane (हिंदी: टोकरी)
- address: where you live, written down (हिंदी: पता)
Talk about it
Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.
- What is on the bed?
- What is in the basket?
- Where are the houses?
- What is the name of your town or city?
Answers for parents
- A basket is on the bed.
- Some flowers are in the basket.
- The houses are in the street.
- For example: My town is Agra.
Grammar corner: Using 'there is' and 'there are'
We use 'there is' for one thing and 'there are' for more than one. So we say 'there is a bed' but 'there are houses'.
- There is a basket on my table.
- There are many shops in my street.
- There is a fan in my room.
Practice at home
- Fill in with 'is' or 'are': There ___ three rooms in my house.
- Fill in with 'in' or 'on': The flowers are ___ the basket.
- Put in order from small to big: house, room, town, street.
Answers: 1. are · 2. in · 3. room, house, street, town
Try this
Make your own 'zoom' rhyme. Start with your town and go smaller: 'In my town there is my street, in my street there is my house...' down to a toy or a cup. Then say it back the other way. Clap on each line.
Tip for parents
Say your home address in Hindi with your child, then help them say the parts in English: house number, street, town, state. It is fine to say place names as they are. Saying it often helps your child remember it, which is also useful for safety.
