What your child learns

  • Words for the countryside: paddy fields, grove, canal
  • Talking about your way to school
  • The 'ch' sound: chair, chalk, chart, lunch
  • Making sentences with new words

What the lesson is about

Ravi is in Class 2. He and his friend walk to school. They pass paddy fields and a mango grove and then reach the main road, which is their shortest way.

On the way they jump over canals, climb trees, swing from branches and watch garden lizards. Even with all this fun, they still reach school on time. The lesson invites children to think about their own route and what makes it interesting.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • paddy: rice plants growing in a field (हिंदी: धान)
  • fields: open land where crops grow (हिंदी: खेत)
  • grove: a small group of trees (हिंदी: बगीचा)
  • route: the way you take to go somewhere (हिंदी: रास्ता)
  • canals: long channels that carry water (हिंदी: नहरें)
  • branches: the arms of a tree (हिंदी: डालियाँ)
  • lizards: small animals with four legs and a long tail (हिंदी: छिपकलियाँ)
  • on foot: by walking (हिंदी: पैदल)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. How do Ravi and his friend go to school?
  2. What do they pass on the way?
  3. Name two fun things they do on the way.
  4. What do you see on your way to school?

Answers for parents

  1. They walk to school.
  2. They pass paddy fields, a mango grove and then reach the main road.
  3. They jump over canals and swing from branches.
  4. For example: I see shops, a temple, cows and a big neem tree.

Grammar corner: The 'ch' sound

When 'c' and 'h' come together, they make one sound, as in 'chair'. This sound can come at the start of a word or at the end. Say it slowly and feel your tongue touch the top of your mouth.

  • Ravi eats his lunch under a tree.
  • We sit on a chair in our classroom.
  • The teacher writes with chalk on the board.

Practice at home

  1. Fill in with 'ch': I keep my books on the ___air.
  2. Choose the things Ravi sees: (a) paddy fields (b) a ship (c) lizards
  3. Make a sentence with the word 'road'.

Answers: 1. chair · 2. (a) paddy fields and (c) lizards · 3. Sample: We cross the road carefully.

Try this

Draw your way to school together on a sheet of paper, or just talk it through. Mark your home at one end and the school at the other. Add things you pass, like a shop, a tree or a pond, and name each one in English.

Tip for parents

On the way to school, play 'I see' in Hindi first, then English: 'मुझे पेड़ दिख रहा है — I see a tree.' Let your child say whatever words they know in English and fill the rest in Hindi. Over the weeks, the English part will grow.
