What your child learns

  • Action words: climb, leap, hop, swim, trot, fly
  • Animal names and how they move
  • Saying 'I can ___ like a ___'
  • The song of 'I' and the short 'i' sound

What the poem is about

A child says how much fun it is to act like different animals and birds. The child can jump like a lamb, climb like a cat, hop like a frog and swim like a fish. The child can also trot like a horse and fly like a bird.

The poem is full of joy and play. It shows that pretending is a happy way to learn, and that each animal moves in its own special way.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • fun: something that makes you happy (हिंदी: मज़ा)
  • leap: to jump high or far (हिंदी: छलांग)
  • lamb: a baby sheep (हिंदी: मेमना)
  • climb: to go up using hands and feet (हिंदी: चढ़ना)
  • hop: to make small jumps (हिंदी: फुदकना)
  • trot: to run with short steps, like a horse (हिंदी: दुलकी चाल)
  • act: to pretend to be someone or something (हिंदी: नकल करना)

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. How does a frog move in the poem?
  2. Which animal trots?
  3. Name two things the child can do in the poem.
  4. Which animal would you like to act like, and why?

Answers for parents

  1. A frog hops.
  2. A horse trots.
  3. The child can climb like a cat and swim like a fish.
  4. For example: I would act like a bird because I want to fly in the sky.

Grammar corner: Action words (verbs)

Action words tell us what someone does. Hop, swim and fly are action words. Every animal in this poem has its own action word.

  • The monkey climbs the mango tree.
  • The duck swims in the pond.
  • The sparrow flies over our house.

Practice at home

  1. Match the animal to its action: frog, fish, bird — fly, swim, hop.
  2. Fill in the blank: A horse can ___.
  3. Make a sentence: I can ___ like a ___.

Answers: 1. frog - hop, fish - swim, bird - fly · 2. trot · 3. Sample: I can hop like a frog.

Try this

Play 'Act like me'. One person calls out an animal in English, such as 'frog' or 'horse', and everyone moves like it. Then the child says the action word aloud: 'hop', 'trot'. Take turns being the caller.

Tip for parents

Say the Hindi action first, like 'मेंढक की तरह कूदो', and then the English 'hop like a frog' while you both do it. Moving while speaking helps the new word stick. Laugh together and praise each try.
