What your child learns
- Names of bicycle parts: seat, pedal, tyre, bell
- Colour words: red, blue, black
- Using 'a' and 'an' before words
- Reciting a short poem with rhythm
What the poem is about
A child talks proudly about a red bicycle. The bell rings to tell friends to move out of the way. The seat is blue, and the tyres and pedals are black. The child rides sometimes fast and sometimes slow.
The bicycle needs only some air in its tyres to keep going. Before riding, the child puts on a small helmet and then rides happily everywhere. The poem shares the joy of riding and quietly reminds children about staying safe.
New words, with Hindi meanings
- pedal: the part you push with your feet to make a bicycle move (हिंदी: पैडल)
- aside: to one side, out of the way (हिंदी: एक तरफ़)
- tyre: the rubber ring around a wheel (हिंदी: टायर)
- sometimes: not always, only at some times (हिंदी: कभी-कभी)
- helmet: a hard cap that keeps your head safe (हिंदी: हेलमेट)
- everywhere: in all places (हिंदी: हर जगह)
- track: the right path or way (हिंदी: रास्ता)
Talk about it
Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.
- What colour is the child's bicycle?
- What does the bell do?
- What does the child wear before riding?
- Where would you go if you had a bicycle?
Answers for parents
- The bicycle is red.
- The bell rings so that friends move aside.
- The child wears a little helmet.
- For example: I would go to my grandmother's house and to the park.
Grammar corner: Using 'a' and 'an'
We use 'an' before words that start with a vowel sound, like 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u'. We use 'a' before other words. So we say 'a bell' but 'an apple'.
- I have a bicycle with a red seat.
- My friend ate an apple after the ride.
- There is an ant on my bicycle bell.
Practice at home
- Fill in the blank with 'a' or 'an': I saw ___ elephant near my school.
- Fill in the blank: I wear a ___ to keep my head safe on a bicycle.
- Say aloud the colours of these bicycle parts from the poem: seat, tyres, bicycle.
Answers: 1. an · 2. helmet · 3. The seat is blue, the tyres are black, and the bicycle is red.
Try this
Play 'pretend bicycle'. The child sits on a chair and pedals in the air. Call out 'fast' or 'slow' and the child pedals that way. Say 'bell!' and the child says 'trin, trin' and pretends to ring it. Then swap roles so the child gives the orders in English.
Tip for parents
Point to a real bicycle or a picture and ask in Hindi, 'यह क्या है?' Then say the English word together: seat, pedal, bell. If your child says 'cycle ki ghanti' first, smile, and then say 'bicycle bell' together.
