What your child learns
- Telling a story in the right order
- Past tense words: threw, brought, picked
- Joining two sentences with 'and'
- Using things around us to play
What the story is about
It is a holiday, and Jeet and Babli play many games, like skipping and hide and seek. Then they play bat and ball. Babli hits the ball and it flies into Mohit's garden. The house is locked, they cannot find the ball, and the game stops.
Babli knows how to make a ball. The friends collect rags, paper and wool, and Babli rolls them up and ties them with string. The game starts again. When Jeet hits the new ball hard, it breaks open in the air. Babli catches a piece of rag and shouts that Jeet is out. The chapter also has a picture of children playing to talk about.
New words, with Hindi meanings
- holiday: a day with no school (हिंदी: छुट्टी)
- skipped: jumped over a rope again and again (हिंदी: रस्सी कूदी)
- threw: sent something through the air with the hand (हिंदी: फेंका)
- locked: shut with a lock (हिंदी: ताला लगा)
- rags: old pieces of cloth (हिंदी: चिथड़े)
- brought: carried something here (हिंदी: लाई)
- string: a thin rope (हिंदी: डोरी)
- scattered: spread all over (हिंदी: बिखर गया)
Talk about it
Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.
- Why did the game stop the first time?
- What did Babli use to make a ball?
- Why did Babli shout 'Out! Out!'?
- What games do you like to play with your friends?
Answers for parents
- The ball went into Mohit's garden, his house was locked, and they could not find the ball.
- She used rags, paper and wool, and tied them with string.
- The new ball broke open in the air and she caught a piece of rag.
- For example: I like to play hide and seek and cricket with my friends.
Grammar corner: Joining sentences with 'and'
'And' joins two ideas into one sentence. Instead of saying two short sentences, we can say one longer sentence. This makes our talk smooth.
- Jeet held the bat and Babli held the ball.
- We found some paper and some wool.
- I like skipping and my sister likes hide and seek.
Practice at home
- Join with 'and': Babli ran. Jeet ran.
- Put in order: (a) The game stopped. (b) Babli hit the ball. (c) The ball went into a garden.
- Fill in the blank: Babli tied the ball with a ___.
Answers: 1. Babli and Jeet ran. · 2. (b), (c), (a) · 3. string
Try this
Make a ball the way Babli did. Roll some old paper or a soft old cloth into a tight ball and wrap it with thread or a rubber band. Play catch and say 'Out!' whenever someone catches it. Count the catches in English.
Tip for parents
Tell the story first in Hindi, the way you would tell it at bedtime. Then ask your child to tell it back, mixing Hindi and English words like 'ball', 'bat' and 'garden'. Praise every try, and slowly add one more English word each time.
