What your child learns

  • Action words for play: bounce, throw, catch, swing
  • Joining two words with 'and': run and skip
  • Names of outdoor games and toys
  • Reciting a poem with actions

What the poem is about

The poem is about a child who loves to play outside in the garden on fine days. First the child plays with a ball, bouncing, throwing and catching it. Then the child plays with a kite, tugging and pulling it and flying it high.

Last, the child plays with friends. They run, skip, jump, sway, slide and swing together. The poem has a happy, carefree feeling, and its repeating lines make it easy and fun to recite. The unit opens with a busy picture of children playing marbles, hopscotch, tops and other games outside their homes.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • garden: a piece of land with plants and grass (हिंदी: बगीचा)
  • bounce: to make a ball hit the ground and come back up (हिंदी: टप्पा खिलाना)
  • throw: to send something through the air with your hand (हिंदी: फेंकना)
  • catch: to hold something that is coming towards you (हिंदी: पकड़ना)
  • tug: to pull hard, again and again (हिंदी: खींचना)
  • skip: to move along with small hops and jumps (हिंदी: उछलते हुए चलना)
  • sway: to move slowly from side to side (हिंदी: झूमना)
  • slide: to move smoothly down a slope (हिंदी: फिसलना)

Sing and dance

Once your child knows the poem, sing it together with actions. Children who can’t sing yet can still do the moves.

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. Where does the child like to play?
  2. What does the child do with the kite?
  3. What do the friends do together?
  4. What is your favourite game to play outside?

Answers for parents

  1. The child likes to play out in the garden.
  2. The child tugs the kite, pulls it and flies it.
  3. They run, skip, jump, sway, slide and swing.
  4. For example: I like to play hide and seek with my cousins.

Grammar corner: Joining words with 'and'

We use 'and' to join two words or ideas. Run and jump means doing both. 'And' helps us say more in one sentence.

  • I bounce and catch my red ball.
  • Riya and Sonu fly a kite.
  • We slide and swing in the park.

Practice at home

  1. Join with 'and': sing, dance
  2. Fill in the blank: I throw the ball and you ___ it.
  3. Say aloud three things you can do with a ball.

Answers: 1. sing and dance · 2. catch · 3. For example: bounce it, throw it, kick it.

Try this

Say the poem slowly and act out every action word. Bounce an imaginary ball, pull an invisible kite string, sway like a tree and pretend to go down a slide. Then play 'Simon says' with the same words: 'Simon says skip', 'Simon says swing'. Let your child be Simon next.

Tip for parents

Ask your child in Hindi what games they play outside, and what each game is called at home, such as kanche or pitthoo. Then find the English word together: kanche are marbles, patang is a kite. Say each poem action in Hindi first and then in English, and praise your child for trying both.
