What your child learns
- Nature words: field, tree, sea
- One and many: umbrella and umbrellas, ship and ships
- Rhyming words: tree and sea
- Learning a short poem by heart
What the poem is about
The poem describes rain falling all around. It falls on the fields and the trees, on the umbrellas of people nearby, and even on the ships far away at sea.
The feeling is calm and wide. The poem moves from things close by to things far away, showing that the rain reaches everywhere.
New words, with Hindi meanings
- raining: when water falls from the clouds (हिंदी: बारिश हो रही है)
- all around: everywhere you look (हिंदी: चारों ओर)
- falls: comes down from above (हिंदी: गिरती है)
- field: a large open piece of land, often used for crops (हिंदी: खेत)
- umbrellas: things you hold over your head to stay dry in the rain (हिंदी: छाते)
- ships: big boats that sail on the sea (हिंदी: जहाज़)
- sea: a very large area of salty water (हिंदी: समुद्र)
Talk about it
Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.
- What does the rain fall on?
- Where are the ships?
- Why do people use umbrellas?
- What do you like to do on a rainy day?
Answers for parents
- It falls on the fields and trees, on umbrellas, and on ships.
- The ships are at sea.
- People use umbrellas to stay dry in the rain.
- For example: I like to jump in puddles and drink hot milk.
Grammar corner: One and many: adding -s
When there is more than one thing, we often add -s at the end of the word. One umbrella becomes many umbrellas. One ship becomes many ships.
- I have one umbrella, but our family has three umbrellas.
- One tree stands near our school; many trees grow in the park.
- A ship sails away while other ships wait by the shore.
Practice at home
- Spot the rhyme: which word in the poem rhymes with 'tree'?
- Make it many: one field → two ___; one ship → five ___.
- Say aloud: 'The rain falls on the ___.' Use something you can see.
Answers: 1. sea · 2. fields; ships · 3. For example: The rain falls on the roof.
Try this
Make the sound of rain together. Start by tapping one finger on your palm, then two, then the whole hand, then pat your knees for heavy rain, and slow down again. Then walk around the house or look out of the window and name things the rain would fall on.
Tip for parents
Ask your child in Hindi, “बारिश कहाँ-कहाँ गिरती है?” Let them answer in Hindi: खेत, पेड़, छाता. Then say the English word for each one together: field, tree, umbrella. Mixing both languages is fine; praise every English word they try.
