What your child learns
- Words for times of day: morning, evening
- The sun in the morning, the moon at night
- Rhyming words: sun and one, moon and soon
- Saying a poem softly with a steady beat
What the poem is about
In the first part, the clock goes tick tock and the sun tells a little one to wake up, because it is morning.
In the second part, the clock ticks again and the moon says it is time to sleep. It wishes sweet dreams and says no more talking, because morning will come soon. The poem feels calm and loving, like a parent tucking a child into bed.
New words, with Hindi meanings
- morning: the early part of the day, when the sun comes up (हिंदी: सुबह)
- evening: the end of the day, before night (हिंदी: शाम)
- clock: a thing that shows us the time (हिंदी: घड़ी)
- wake up: to stop sleeping and open your eyes (हिंदी: जागना)
- moon: the round light we see in the sky at night (हिंदी: चाँद)
- dreams: pictures and stories we see in our sleep (हिंदी: सपने)
- soon: in a short time (हिंदी: जल्दी ही)
Sing and dance
Once your child knows the poem, sing it together with actions. Children who can’t sing yet can still do the moves.
Talk about it
Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.
- Who tells us to wake up in the poem?
- Who tells us it is time to sleep?
- What sound does the clock make?
- What is the first thing you do in the morning?
Answers for parents
- The sun.
- The moon.
- Tick tock.
- For example: I wake up, say good morning to Mummy and brush my teeth.
Grammar corner: Rhyming words
Rhyming words end with the same sound, like sun and one, or moon and soon. Poems use them to sound like a song. Listen to the end of each line to find them.
- The sun is up, so I drink milk from my cup.
- I hear the clock while I put on my sock.
- I see the moon and hum a soft tune.
Practice at home
- Spot the rhyme: which word rhymes with “moon”? sun, soon, clock
- Fill in the blank: The ___ goes tick tock.
- Say aloud: when do you say “Good morning” and when do you say “Good night”?
Answers: 1. soon · 2. clock · 3. Sample: I say “Good morning” when I wake up, and “Good night” when I go to sleep.
Try this
Act out morning and night. When you say “Tick tock, wake up!” your child stretches and gets up like the sun is calling. When you say “Time to sleep”, they lie down and close their eyes. Your child can also draw a sun on one side of a page and a moon on the other.
Tip for parents
Use the poem in your real day. In the morning say “सुबह हो गई, it’s morning!” and at bedtime say “चाँद आ गया, time to sleep.” Let your child repeat in Hindi, English or both, and smile at every try.
