Watch: One Two

Play the video three or four times. The first time, just listen. Then point at the pictures, and from the third time, say the lines along with the video. Short, repeated listening is how CALP builds a child’s English.

What your child learns

  • Number names from one to ten
  • Animal sounds in English: moo, roar
  • Rhyming words like four and roar
  • Counting things at home in English

What the poem is about

The poem counts in pairs. After the numbers come small rhyming bits: cows say moo, lions roar, and a clock goes tick. As the counting goes higher, the poem says it is getting late. At ten, it asks us to say it all again.

It is a light, playful counting song. Children learn the number names and enjoy the animal sounds at the same time.

New words, with Hindi meanings

  • cows: big farm animals that give us milk (हिंदी: गायें)
  • moo: the sound a cow makes (हिंदी: गाय का रँभाना)
  • lions: big wild cats with a loud voice (हिंदी: शेर)
  • roar: the loud sound a lion makes (हिंदी: दहाड़ना)
  • clock: a thing that shows us the time (हिंदी: घड़ी)
  • tick: the small sound a clock makes (हिंदी: टिक-टिक)
  • late: after the right time; near the end of the day (हिंदी: देर)
  • again: one more time (हिंदी: फिर से)

Sing and dance

Once your child knows the poem, sing it together with actions. Children who can’t sing yet can still do the moves.

Talk about it

Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.

  1. Which animal says 'moo' in the poem?
  2. Which animal roars?
  3. What does the clock do?
  4. Can you count from one to ten for me, just like the poem?

Answers for parents

  1. The cows say moo.
  2. The lions roar.
  3. The clock ticks.
  4. For example: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

Grammar corner: Rhyming words

Rhyming words end with the same sound. In this poem a number often rhymes with the word after it, like four and roar. This makes the numbers easy to remember.

  • Nine, ten, I see a hen.
  • Three, four, the cows want more.
  • One, two, my shoe is blue.

Practice at home

  1. Which word rhymes with four: roar, cow or clock?
  2. Fill in the blank: Cows say ___.
  3. Say aloud: count five spoons in the kitchen in English.

Answers: 1. roar · 2. moo · 3. One, two, three, four, five.

Try this

Count and make sounds together. Say the numbers from one to ten slowly, and after each pair let your child moo like a cow, roar like a lion or say 'tick tock' like a clock. Then count ten small things at home, such as spoons or shoes.

Tip for parents

Count something in Hindi first, ek, do, teen, and then count the same things again in English. Let your child mix, like 'ek, two, teen', and gently say the English number after them. Clap and praise each new number they say.
