Watch: Our Day
Play the video three or four times. The first time, just listen. Then point at the pictures, and from the third time, say the lines along with the video. Short, repeated listening is how CALP builds a child’s English.
What your child learns
- Time words: morning, evening, night
- Direction words: east and west
- Opposite words: rises and sets
- Telling the order of a day in simple sentences
What the lesson is about
This lesson describes how a day goes. In the morning the sun rises in the east, the birds start singing and our day begins. The sun gives us light and heat.
The sun sets in the west and evening comes. The moon and stars come out, the birds go back to their nests, and people go home, have dinner and go to bed. It teaches the order of a day and simple facts about the sun.
New words, with Hindi meanings
- morning: the early part of the day (हिंदी: सुबह)
- rises: comes up (हिंदी: उगता है)
- east: the side where the sun comes up (हिंदी: पूर्व)
- heat: warmth (हिंदी: गर्मी)
- sets: goes down (हिंदी: डूबता है)
- west: the side where the sun goes down (हिंदी: पश्चिम)
- evening: the time when the day ends and it gets dark (हिंदी: शाम)
- nests: homes that birds make (हिंदी: घोंसले)
Talk about it
Ask these aloud after reading or watching. Let your child answer in English if they can, or mix in their home language. Both help.
- Where does the sun rise?
- What does the sun give us?
- What do the birds do in the evening?
- What do you do in the morning, and what do you do at night?
Answers for parents
- The sun rises in the east.
- The sun gives us light and heat.
- The birds go back to their nests.
- For example: In the morning I brush my teeth and go to school. At night I have dinner and go to bed.
Grammar corner: Opposite words
Opposite words mean the very different thing, like up and down. This lesson has many pairs of opposites. Learning them in pairs helps children remember both words.
- The sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening.
- The sun comes up in the east and goes down in the west.
- Birds fly out in the day and come back at night.
Practice at home
- Fill in the blank: The sun sets in the ___.
- Match the opposites: rises, east, morning (west / evening / sets).
- Say three sentences about your day: one for morning, one for evening, one for night.
Answers: 1. west · 2. rises → sets; east → west; morning → evening · 3. For example: In the morning I drink milk. In the evening I play outside. At night I sleep.
Try this
In the morning, stand outside or near a window and find which side the sun is on: that is east. Then make a “My day” picture strip with your child: draw the morning, the evening and the night, and say one sentence about each.
Tip for parents
Talk about your own day in Hindi first: “सुबह सूरज पूर्व में उगता है.” Then say it in English: “The sun rises in the east.” Use the pairs सुबह – morning and शाम – evening every day, and praise your child when they use one in English.
